Children's Party Games

Here at Incy Wincy HQ, we are constantly asked if we know of any good party games, so I have put a list together of some of my favourite party games from my childhood!

Party games are a great ice breaker especially for shy children.

Ice Breaker

One party ice breaker is to buy a packet of different colour stars and hide them around the room before the party begins. The children need to collect as many pairs of the same colour as they can the children with the most pairs wins.

Party Game Ideas

Bubbles - blow lots of bubbles into the air and let the children catch them. (Be careful though as the bubbles on some flooring can make the surface very slippery).

Sleepy lions - this is a great one for young children (2-4) when things are getting out of control, get everyone to lie down and pretend to be sleepy lions. They must not make a move. You then walk around and try and disturb them by talking or very gently tickling, anyone who moves is out.

What's on the tray - put some disparate and obvious items on a tray. Give each child a pen and piece of paper, let them look at the tray for 2 minutes, then take the tray away. The children have to write down what was on the tray. The one with the most right answers is the winner

Touch and feel - take a box and put different items in it each time, ask the children to put their hands in the box and guess what it is. (Suggestions - hairbrush, shelled egg, banana, light bulb).

Pass the balloon - split the players into equal teams, the player at the front holds a blown up balloon under their chin, no hands allowed, each child has to pass the balloon to the next child in their team, making sure it's under their chins as they pass along the line. The first to the end is the winner.

Musical bumps - get the children to dance to the music. When the music stops, all the children have to sit down as quickly as possible. The last one to sit is out. The last child left dancing is the winner. With young children you can turn this around and simply try and spot the one to sit down first each time.

Pass the parcel - make a parcel by wrapping up a prize in several layers of paper (one for each child plus an extra one) Sit the children in a circle, give one of them the parcel and when the music starts, get them to hand it to the next child, and so on. When the music stops, the child who is holding the parcel opens the first layer. Then when the music starts again, they hand it on again.

Grandmother's footsteps - one person is Grandmother and they stand with their backs to everyone else who stands well back from them, between 15 and 20 feet. Everyone has to move closer to Grandmother when her head is turned. When she turns around, anyone who she sees still moving has to go back to the beginning. The person who catches up with Grandmother and taps her on the shoulder is the winner. They then become Grandmother and the games begins again.

Musical chairs - put one one less chair than there are children (or cushions, if they're very young). The children have to dance or walk around the chairs and when the music stops, they try and find a chair to sit on, the child without a chair is out. Keep taking one chair away each time. The last child left in is the winner.

Eat the jelly - make individual bowls of jelly with a toy animal inside. Then make each child put their hands behind their backs, and get the animal out of the jelly. The first one to produce their animal is the winner. Best left to the end of the party.

Pin the tail on the donkey - get a large piece of card, draw a donkey on it and make a tail. Blindfold each child and get them to attach the tail (with bluetac). Write their names where each child pinned the tail. The closest wins. You can actually buy this game quite cheaply now.

Treasure hunt - can be played indoors or outdoors and can be tailored to different party themes or ideal at Easter. Hide different objects around the room, tell the players how many each they have to find the first one to complete the game is the winner. You can also put clues around the house, telling the children where they might find the next treasure.

Dressing up dancing - choose 5 types of clothing or prop, and make sure there's enough for each child to have one item each, i.e. top, skirt, socks, hat. Then the children dance around. When the music stops, you call out 'hat' and they all have to grab one, put it on, then dance with it until the music stops and then they go for the next item, until they are all dressed.

These games were some of my favourites when I was little. Let us know if you try any of them. Good Luck!!
